Laboratory and Fire Safety Training

Laboratory and Fire Safety Training is required for faculty, staff, and students, graduates and undergraduates, post-doctorates and visiting scholars before initial assignment to a laboratory. This requirement can be satisfied by attending the two-hour seminar or by attending ENVH569, Laboratory Health and Safety Seminar, a one-credit course, offered fall semester. (Check with University scheduled classes.)
The two-hour seminar includes one hour of Laboratory Safety Training, one-half hour of Hazardous Waste and one-half hour of Fire Safety Training. EH&S will schedule at least one session monthly. Check the upcoming seminars on the EH&S homepage at http://www.umass.edu/safety for the times and locations. We are also available to conduct training sessions in your department for your personnel at your convenience (minimum 10 persons). Please call Yung Morgan or Val Steinberg at 5-2682 to schedule this training.

Laboratory Safety Training will include:

  • The UMass Laboratory Health and Safety Plan
  • The Massachusetts Right to Know Law, and how to read MSDSs
  • Basic toxicology including routes of entry and occupational exposure limits (PELs, TLVs)
  • Physical and health hazards of hazardous chemicals
  • Information on safety equipment and personal protective equipment
  • Location and availability of additional reference materials
  • Proper use of laboratory fume hoods
  • Laboratory inspections
  • Emergency awareness

Hazardous Waste Training will include:

  • Federal and state Requirements for point of generation
  • Collection
  • Management and disposal of hazardous waste

Fire Safety Training will include

  • Common fire hazards and causes and your role in preventing fires.
  • What to do in case of a fire and what to do if trapped by a fire
  • Fire protection systems
  • How to choose and use the proper fire extinguisher

Please note that some sessions require outdoor training.
