The Environmental Health program
assists the University in maintaining food, residence halls, family
housing, and academic buildings in a sanitary manner in a community
of 30,000 persons.
Food protection and sanitation, housing, water supply, swimming
pools, solid waste disposal, and child care facilities are some
areas receiving environmental health services. As an example,
inspections of University-owned rooming or dwelling units are
conducted on request of occupants to insure compliance with
appropriate housing codes. The results of the inspections lead to
appropriate corrective action. Routine inspections of many other
operations are conducted to assure compliance with federal and state
health and sanitation codes.
The intention of the Environmental Health program is to promote
practical and attainable levels of protection for personnel, the
community, and the environment.
The Environmental Health program makes recommendations to correct
physical conditions regarding the chlorine and pH levels in
University swimming pools, ensures maintenance of sanitary
conditions in food preparation and serving areas, and issues
citations for code violations. In effect, the Environmental Health
program is the watchdog of the University's overall health and
sanitation operations.
