Asbestos Management Program

UMass utilizes a comprehensive management approach* to maintain a safe and health work environment for employees, students, contractors, and visitors by ensuring asbestos containing material (ACM) will be managed, abated, and disposed of in full compliance with applicable Federal, State, and local regulations to minimize and/or eliminate exposure to airborne asbestos fibers. The ACM Management program impacts the entire campus; however some departments have a larger role than others. The success of the program requires inter-departmental cooperation and strong communication.

EH&S has been designated the UMass agency with ultimate responsibility and authority for management of ACM found on the UMass campus. EH&S is mainly responsible for tracking asbestos compliance activities and ensuring appropriate monitoring and oversight mechanisms are in place for jobs that may impact asbestos.

Work Practices

All asbestos related work must be performed by or contracted through the Physical Plant Environmental Services Shop (ESS) or Facilities and Campus Planning. Undertaking even the smallest renovation job or dismantling equipment without proper planning or improper equipment may result in exposure to asbestos or other hazardous materials (e.g., lead).

Prior to any work being conducted on any material suspected as containing asbestos a work request must be submitted to the Physical Plant work management system to determine if asbestos or other hazardous material will be disturbed. Work requests may be submitted via telephone (545-6402) or computer at http://www.facil.umass.edu and click on the “Service Request” to complete the form.

Emergencies

Anytime a building occupant comes across any damaged material that they think may contain asbestos (e.g., insulated pipe, floor tiles, dry wall) they should contact EH&S at 545-2682 or the Physical Plant Service Desk at 545-6402.
